Memories shared at clubhouse
A group which aims to stimulate memories through rugby debate and discussion held their first meeting last week.
Stirling County RFC Memories Group was launched in the clubhouse at Bridgehaugh on Tuesday November 28.
At the inaugural meeting John Gibson, whose family has extensive and historic links with Stirling County, gave a fact-filled and entertaining presentation on the club’s history.
He also outlined their plans for future development as a community club – with aspirations to remain at the top table of Scottish rugby.
The talk was illustrated with old team photos – including one of the team who overcame London Scottish, the Gala Match where the club were promoted to Division One, and the side who played against the Barbarians.
Club member Derek Young is behind the Stirling project, which originally comes from SFA Football Memories project and the Scottish Football Museum.
This initiative was recognised by rugby groups and clubs across the country, where former players or those interested in the sport can come together to share experiences.
Those who go along can watch videos or take part in other fun activities over a cup of tea or coffee.
The key aim is to stimulate memories through discussion about teams and matches from the past – incorporating images and memorabilia.
Derek said: “The benefits of revisiting visual, verbal and aural memories and engaging in social discussion are backed up with scientific evidence.
“Alongside physical exercise, these activities are essential for maintaining mental and physical health.”
The next meeting will be at the clubhouse from 1pm to 2.30pm on Tuesday January 14. The guest speaker will be well-known BBC Alba rugby commentator Hugh Dan MacLennan. There will be tea, coffee and biscuits.
