Marie-Claire encouraging others to take up teaching

-

A Balfron High teacher is taking part in a Scottish Government campaign to recruit more people to her profession.

French and Spanish teacher Marie-Claire Maxwell hopes sharing her experience will encourage others to choose education as a career.

Marie-Claire is involved in the Scottish Government’s Teaching Makes People scheme which aims to recruit more teachers and is targeting university undergraduates and career changers.

The campaign is based on research showing people attracted by and suited to teaching are generally motivated by helping to develop others and making the most of their own knowledge.

Marie-Claire said: “I’ve always enjoyed working with young people but it was only after teaching English during my year abroad in Paris that I realised I wanted to be a teacher.

“I could see what a school day looked like from a teacher’s perspective and began to understand the highlights and challenges of this profession.

“Being able to speak another language is an important skill because it teaches you so much about your own language.

“Students love learning about the culture and different ways of life, and it really is the best feeling seeing young people doing well and feeling proud of themselves.

“I worked hard to become a teacher and it was worth it. You have such an important role to play in shaping young people’s lives and I really think you would be hard pushed to find a more rewarding and inspirational career.”
