Gary’s on a mission to leave village flushed with success

-

A Forth Valley first responder, from Bridge of Allan, is attempting to raise funds to improve facilities at a school in Africa.

Gary Drummond (30), who now lives in Alloa, has made several trips to Ghana and has been involved in numerous fundraisers to help children in the country.

The aim of the former pupil of Bridge of Allan Primary and Wallace High is to raise enough money to build a new toilet facility for pupils at a school in the village of Frami, Cape Coast.

During a visit to Ghana in October last year, Gary was shocked to see the toilet facilities for the pupils at Mercies International Academy.

He said:“The toilet facilities, used by both boys and girls, were just two holes in the ground surrounded by bamboo, which you could basically see through.

“There’s just no privacy at all.

“Each time one of the kids goes there, pretty much the whole village can see them.

“It’s a really poor village and there’s not a great deal they can do about it so I just want to raise enough money to help build a toilet block for the kids.”Gary has set himself the target of raising £800 towards the project.

He added:“I met all the kids in October as well as the head teacher and they were all lovely, so I really wanted to do something to help them out.

“The cost of building the block will be around £800 so if I could raise that then we could get them some facilities that would give them a little bit of privacy.”

Gary has already donated books, a television, DVD player and DVDs to the school.

It’s not the first time that Gary has gone to great lengths for the people of the country.

In January last year he vowed to raise funds for a young burns victim, toddler Elizabeth Atta, to undergo treatment after she was left with horrific burns after getting trapped in a house fire.

The two–year–old’s face and torso were badly burned.
