Concert The latest in the series of concerts at St Mary’s Episcopal Church is on Sunday, January 21 at 3pm when there is an organ recital by David Hamilton, university organist at Strathclyd­e University. He teaches at the Music School of Douglas Academy and at the Royal Conservato­ire of Scotland and has performed throughout Europe and in North America, Russia and China, and is a guest professor at Shanghai Conservato­ry. The recital will explore the organ repertoire from the 17th to 21st centuries, with music from Bach, Widor and an improvisat­ion and David will be playing on the church’s restored Binns Willis organ. SWI news At the January meeting on fish cookery, Ewan Ayton, the chef at The Oak Tree, Balmaha demonstrat­ed a pan-roasted salmon dish. He explained the reason for many of the procedures he uses and seasoned his demonstrat­ion with interestin­g stories of incidents during his career, before presenting the delicious results for members to taste. New minister The Induction of Callander Kirk’s new minister, the Rev Jeff McCormick, takes place on Thursday, January 25 at 7pm in the kirk. The service will be followed by a short welcome social. Messy Church A chance for families to have fun, relax, explore faith and enjoy a meal together tomorrow (Saturday) from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Callander Kirk Hall. All welcome. WI news On January 11 members and guests enjoyed afternoon tea at the Winnock Hotel to celebrate the 90th birthday of Drymen institute. Members were joined by guests from Stirling headquarte­rs and neighbouri­ng institutes. Mrs Elspeth O’Brien gave an account of the inaugural meeting of the institute taken from the minutes of that meeting held in 1927 and a large selection of “rural” memorabili­a was on display. Honorary membership­s were awarded to Mrs Helen Brown and Mrs Margaret Johnstone who have both been members since their teens. Long service certificat­es were awarded to Mrs Margaret Gibb and Mrs Noreen Elder. The birthday cake made and decorated by Mrs Joy Kirkland was cut by Mrs O’Brien and Mrs Brown. Everyone enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea courtesy of the Winnock and were entertaine­d by Fine Fettle with a selection of songs stories and jokes. The vote of thanks acknowledg­ing the contributi­ons to the event from the committee, members and the hotel was given by Mrs Mary Callan. Local history society Douglas Annan will give an illustrate­d talk on Old Glasgow through the lens at the next meeting on Thursday, January 25 in the village hall at 7.45pm. New members welcome, annual subscripti­on £7. Admission for a single meeting is £2. Church Sunday worship is at 11.30am, tea and coffee is available before and after the service. The evening prayer meeting is on Sunday at 7pm. All welcome. The drop in coffee morning is every Friday in the Winnock Hotel at 10.30am. Coffee, a goodie and a chat for the amazing price of £1.
