A MOON LANDING

- David Ogilvie

Stirling Albion manager Dave Mackay has made former St Johnstone midfielder Kevin Moon his first signing of the January transfer window.

The 30-year-old returned to Scotland in the autumn after a spell with ECU Joondalup SC in Western Australia where he played alongside ex-Albion striker Gordon Smith.

Moon has put pen to paper until the end of the season.

The player began his career with St Johnstone before moving to Alloa for a short spell towards the end of 2012/13.

He then helped Raith Rovers beat Rangers in the Challenge Cup final of 2013/14 during his time at Stark’s Park before heading Down Under to seek a new challenge in 2016.

Mackay said: “I’m delighted to get Kevin because there was interest from a Championship club and also a couple of teams in League 1.

“He is normally a central midfielder – a box-to-box type of player with good energy – but he has also played on the right.

“He’s signed until the end of the season and I’m sure his aim will be to get back playing at a higher level but we are happy to have him in the meantime.

“He was at St Johnstone at the same time as me but he suffered a bad injury and that hampered him a bit. Then he moved on to sign for Paul Hartley at Alloa.

“He was training with us last week and is still a wee bit short of sharpness because his Australian season finished in September but he’s a naturally fit guy so it won’t be a problem.

“We are still looking to add to the squad and we need to bring in a goalkeeper.

“There will also be players leaving this month and Cammy Thomson has gone back to St Johnstone after his loan spell ended on Monday.

“He was unlucky in that he didn’t get too many games after picking up an injury but it might be possible to get him back on loan depending on how long Steven Noble is out for.”

Albion are due to host Edinburgh City in Ladbrokes League 2 tomorrow, weather permitting, as they bid to end
