Drum school could open at unit

Ringo Starr and Phil Collins wannabes could get a chance to beat themselves a new path to fame in Stirling.

Sam Waller of Stirling Drum Tuition has applied for a change of use to unit 29 at Stirling Enterprise Park to turn it into a drumming school.

Mr Waller is said to provide one-to-one drum tuition for around 35 people with an age range of seven to 60, but around 80 per cent of whom are of school age.

In a submission to Stirling Council planners, his agent said: “Tuition is provided to exam standard and many pupils have been successful in passing accredited examinations set by Rockschool.

“The business started in August 2015 and has been built up to a point where turnover is around £18,000 per annum.

“Stirling Drum Tuition is unique in that it offers tuition in a dedicated studio with recording facilities that allow pupils to receive online recordings to support reinforcement and practice of new instrumental skills.”

The business currently operates out of a studio rented from Good Vibrations Music Studios in Imex Business Centre, Springkerse Road. The existing stuido will not be available after March 31, requiring a relocation to alternative premises.

Unit 29 at STEP is a standalone unit at the edge of the business park, which has most recently been used as a business buying old clothing for cash.

Mr Waller’s agent said that failure to obtain planning consent for the change of use of the unit to a music studio would “force closure of the business”.

A noise assessment, which looks at the potential for adverse impact given the studio would be near other business premises, has also been submitted. It says the proposed insulation would be adequate, limiting noise breakout from the studio “to levels which would not compromise working conditions within neighbouring commercial premises”.

The studio, however, is said to be “largely isolated” from other “noise-sensitive commercial units”, adjoining only a storage area on the west and an electricity substation at the north-east corner.
