Prizes are the icing on the cake for Rebecca

- Alastair McNeill

A Bannockburn cake maker has scooped two prizes at this week’s Scottish Wedding Awards 2018.

Rebecca McEwan started‘fondlyiced’ seven years ago from her parents’home in Glasgow Road, making celebration cakes, wedding cakes, shortbread and tablet.

The firm won the cake designer of the year central title followed by the overall cake designer of the year prize.

Rebecca, who still works full time as a chef, said:“I was astounded to learn that I’d won cake designer of the year for Central region, but I never imagined in a million years that I was even in with a chance of being overall winner.

“I have a very small family-run business and was up against some massive and very well known cake companies throughout Scotland.

“When it was announced I’d won overall winner 2018 I was in shock; I think I am still in shock if I’m honest.”

The 34-year-old started baking cakes as a hobby for friends and family before expanding.

She runs the business, with assistance from her family, alongside a full-time job as chef at the Coffee Bothy in Blairmains .

Rebecca said:“I don’t employ anyone. Fondlyiced is my second job which I do in my spare time – every evening and days off.

“My parents Janet and Bill Graham help me when I am really busy with some jobs like making my buttercream for cakes.

“And my husband Alan McEwan is always on hand to help with the washing up.”

The Scottish Wedding Awards are based on customer nominations. Candidates are assessed by a judging panel based on supporting information.

The awards ceremony was held in Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza Hotel on the banks of the Clyde on Monday evening.

The title of groomswear supplier of the year went to Stirling’s House of Henderson.
