We feel like we’re living on a bypass

Alarm over volume of HGVs in Bridge of Allan

- Alastair McNeill

Bridge of Allan residents expressed concern this week over the amount of Heavy Goods Vehicles using the town’s main street.

Jim and Margaret Leishman moved into a flat in Henderson Street opposite the memorial park in December.

Since that date the Leishmans have been stunned by the amount of heavy lorries using the route.

Mr Leishman told the Observer this week: “Lorries are using it on a regular basis – and it’s a very busy road.

“An awful lot of HGVs use it to get on to the M9 at the Keir roundabout as well as in the opposite direction.

“It feels that you are living on a bypass. The trucks are huge.

“I understand local businesses like Graham’s need to use the route, but it’s not just traffic specific to the area using it.

“There should also be more adequate road calming measures – and an attempt to limit the huge trucks trundling through Bridge of Allan.

“There isn’t much in the way of signage to cut vehicles’ speeds, just the 40mph sign.

“One reason for speeding is there are no cars parked in the street as they are further along Henderson Street in the town centre.

“Pollution is another concern with the amount of traffic passing through Bridge of Allan.”

Dunblane and Bridge of Allan Tory councillor Alastair Majury said he wished to see a reduction on the amount of HGVs using the street.

He commented: “Many residents have been concerned about the volume and type of traffic which passes along the street and something must be done to cut the number of heavy vehicles which use this route.

“I hope that all of the issues raised will be fully discussed at the Environment and Housing Committee and a way forward for the specific Henderson Street issues are agreed.”

Conservative colleague Douglas Dodds said he has raised the issue of speeding on Henderson Street with Police Scotland and arranged for the council to record traffic data including speed.

Councillor Dodds said: “I live on Henderson Street and I have seen an increase in traffic travelling along it in the nine years I have been here. Nearly every evening there are long tailbacks and especially later in the evenings there is a lot of speeding.

“I look forward to reviewing the data from the traffic counters that I hope will prove that we need better enforcement.”

A Stirling Council spokesman said this week that a Henderson Street traffic survey was ongoing – and a briefing had been set for all elected members regarding speeding in general and enforcement powers.
