App tells history of the area

Explore Stirling launched

- Robert Fairnie

A new digital app which provides people with a ‘pocket guide’ to the Stirling area has been officially launched.

The Explore Stirling mobile app is designed to help inform visitors and better enable them to navigate some of the most iconic attractions and stunning routes.

Tales of Stirling’s history, nature, culture and attractions are told using music and narrated guides.

There are also details of more than 20 different walking, cycling and driving routes – from the city centre to the Trossachs.

The application was launched by Stirling Council at the Tolbooth last week, and has been developed by tech group Whereverly.

Stirling’s creative youth and local story tellers, with help from the Big Noise Orchestra and students from Forth Valley College, also played a part in the production of the app.

Councillor Margaret Brisley, convener of the council’s finance and economy committee, said: “This app is a brilliant way to showcase Stirling’s famous and iconic history, as well as some of the hidden gems that are maybe not as well-known.

“It has been great to see the young people in our community, from Forth Valley College and Big Noise, take such a prominent role in its development and production, and is the perfect way to bridge the gap between Stirling’s historic past and digitallyled future.”

Stirling West Tory councillor Neil Benny added: “I am very pleased to see this use of technology to promote our area to visitors. I hope it will encourage people to visit more sites off the beaten track and explore all over the Stirling area.

“Given the extremely difficult circumstances our local businesses, high streets and city centre finds itself in at present, I welcome anything that will encourage more people to visit and stay for longer, but much more needs to be done.”

The app works offline and routes can be downloaded and used from any location. Users can search for information on food and drink, parking and scenic views, while there is a rating system to allow feedback. Routes will be developed to coincide with events and dates of historic significance.

The app is available on Apple and Android devices, and follows two smart screens which feature information on tourist attractions and travel being installed in the city.
