Bureau on the look out for volunteers

- Staff reporter

Stirling Citizens Advice Bureau is looking for volunteers to train as advisers due to the impact of welfare reforms.

Adviser training starts on Friday July 6 at ACE Cornton, 9.30am-2.30pm each week, and continues every Friday for 13 weeks.

In addition to the classes, advisers should be available to do on the job shadowing for a few hours through the week. The advice service is open for this 10am-3pm Monday to Thursday.Volunteer expenses are paid.

Bureau Manager Craig Anderson said:“Everyone knows their local CAB offers free, independent and confidential advice on a wide range of subjects, but not everybody realises that 95 per cent of CAB advisers are, in fact, trained volunteers - local people giving up just a few hours of their time each week to help their community.

“Anyone can volunteer. You don’t have to come with formal qualifications or a vast amount of knowledge.

“Our training will help you become a confident adviser with a constantly updated information system to work with.

“Because we always want our staff to reflect the community they serve, we hope people of all ages and backgrounds will be interested in finding out more about volunteering with their local CAB students and young people, older people and the retired, parents at home during school hours, and the unemployed.

Craig added:“Because people move on, get new jobs or go on to further and higher education – often because of the skills and experience they gain with the Bureau – we always need more volunteers.

“The impact of the welfare reforms is also adding to the need for more frontline advisers.”

People are also needed to act as CAB board members, help with IT, social media, fundraising and marketing.

For more details about volunteering with CAB contact Craig on 01786 464 773 or email: craiganderson@ stirlingcab.casonline.org. uk or pop into CAB, 3 Cameronian Street, Stirling, FK8 2DX between 10am-3pm.
