Pedal power to bring cinema to Macrobert
Fun event will show Glasgow 2018 Euro Championships
A big screen will be erected in the city when a special ‘cycle cinema’ comes to town this summer.
People will have the chance to enjoy coverage of the Glasgow 2018 European Championships during the event which is being run by the Macrobert Arts Centre on Sunday, August 12.
Sports fans are invited to make their way to land next to the Engine Shed where a big screen will be set up – and there will be a chance to saddle up and pedal to power the projector.
The European Championships, which is in its first year in the current format, is a multi-sports event featuring aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon along with golf. Athletics will take place in Berlin.
The governing bodies for each sport have all co-ordinated their own continental championships so they take place together as part of the summer event.
Along with the elite sporting action, other sports-related entertainment will also be shown on the day of the cycle cinema.
And for those not interested in cycling there will also be opportunities to kick back and enjoy the action.
The Macrobert has issued an appeal for anyone interested in being part of the event to get involved.
Elizabeth Fuller, project and events manager, said: “Any cycle groups who want to get involved will be offered the chance to promote their group at the event, so we’re hoping lots of different people will apply.
“For anyone who wants to volunteer, but not get on a bike, there is also the chance to meet and greet visitors as part of the volunteer event team and there will be refreshments on offer for all our volunteers.”
Those at the Macrobert are also reaching out to professional filmmakers who have cycling-related short films that could be featured on the big screen.
All submissions must be no longer than 15-minutes long and the arts centre will only consider cycling-related films.
Grahame Reid, film programmer, added: “We’re working hard to put together a great programme of films and coverage to make this a truly fantastic day that captures the energy and magic of this new sports event.
“We are only accepting short films about, or related to, cycling that are submitted by Friday, June 8 – and with such a breadth of talent out there we’re looking forward to viewing the entries.”
During the event there will be opportunities for aspiring young film-makers aged 16 to 25.
Applications are open to have the chance to work with a professional film-maker during the project – developing the skills and experience required to start on a path to becoming a successful documentary maker.
The film crew will go ‘on-location’ during the championships, gathering cycling footage and co-creating a documentary that will be part of the cycle cinema programme.
Applications must be submitted before the deadline on Friday, June 15.
