Ladies home in on great victory
Bridge of Allan women’s first tennis team returned to winning ways with a comprehensive 11-1 home victory against Strathblane that has boosted their Division One title challenge.
Juniors Abbie Woodward and Lucy MacKenzie led the way with four wins, ably supported by Heather Forsythe and Clare Woodward who also recorded a maximum.
Captain Clare was pleased with the performance against tenacious opponents, saying:“We’ve got a good blend of youth and experience this year which hopefully means that we can maintain our title challenge right to the end of the season.
“There is no doubt that the balance is just about perfect, and the level of consistency has been a huge plus over the first-half of the season. What is vital now is that we maintain our levels.”
However, there was disappointment for the women’s second team who lost a hard fought encounter 7-5 at unbeaten league leaders Linlithgow.
The men’s firsts made it three wins in a row with a 9-3 victory away at Inchyra.
Twins Calum and Lewis Bowmaker again led the way remaining unbeaten on the night as did the returning Ruaridh Fraser and Chris Horgan.
Captain Colin Woodward was keen to wax lyrical about his men and said: “The boys have really picked up and to notch three wins in succession is hugely satisfying. It was also a huge boost to welcome back Ruaridh Fraser from the US collegiate scene and his addition will really boost our title prospects.”
Meanwhile the men’s seconds drew 6-6 at home to Kippen to stay mid-table in a game captain Callum Haig felt was one they could have won.
He said:“We gave ourselves a great opportunity to retain our 100 per cent home record for the summer but unfortunately couldn’t win the final rubber despite having a 5-3 lead.
“Whilst it’s disappointing, we need to focus our efforts on the tough fixtures coming up to try and maintain our Division Two status.”
