Time trial starts week of cycling action around city

-

A number of top cycling events will be taking place in the Stirling area in the coming week.

The Corrieri Classic time trial is set to be held this Sunday, the Wallace Monument hill climb is due next Thursday and the Battle of the Braes road race is on Saturday, June 16.

This weekend’s event will see riders take part in a 10-mile individual time trial, starting on the A811 behind the Touch Road junction and heading out to the roundabout at Kippen and back.

The race is usually held in mid-March as the season-opening 10-mile TT in Scotland but was rescheduled due to roadworks.

Top riders taking part include Jason Roberts of Bioracer-Project GO and newlycrowned Scottish National 25-mile TT champion and Commonwealth Games rider Kyle Gordon (RT 23).

The Wallace Monument hill climb next Thursday is for Stirling Bike Club riders only.

Members of the youth section, Wallace Warriors and senior members, will take on the climb from the visitor centre up to the base of the historic monument.

Following this event will be the Battle of the Braes, regarded by many as a classic on the Scottish road racing scene.

Riders will take on a 72-mile course, starting at McLaren Leisure Centre in Callander before heading towards Thornhill.

They will take in Ballat Toll, Kippen roundabout and Thornhill before circuits around the B822, A81 and A873 will take them to the finish on top of the big braes on the A81.

The event has attracted top riders from around the UK, including Alex Luhrs and Richard Jones of Ribble Cycling, and Martin Ford of Java Partizan Pro Cycling Team.

Top Scottish riders including Fraser Martin of Saint Piran, Tim Blathwayt of Veloclub Edinburgh, Andy Brown of Metaltek-Kuota and Richard McDonald of Bioracer-Project GO are also taking part.

Stirling Bike Club have host a range of events throughout the area, including the Crit on the Campus at the University of Stirling.

The Crit Under the Castle, which normally takes place in June, is taking a year off.
