The young orienteers of Newton Primary School, Dunblane, had a day to remember at the Scottish Schools Orienteering Championships, as they snapped up third place in the P5/6 boys championship at Pollok Park, Glasgow.

The team, comprising of Jamie Connor, Michael Arestis and Lewis Clinkenbeard was prominent in a field of nearly 400 athletes, and posted an aggregate time of 43.54 to win the bronze medal behind Banchory Primary School and Inverness Gaelic School.

This was helped in no small measure by a fine run from Jamie, who secured the individual silver medal in a time of 10.14, just four seconds behind the winner. Michael was 17th (14.44) and Lewis 30th (18.36).

As a precursor to the event, Active Schools Stirling staged the Dunblane Schools Orienteering Festival at Laighhills and Newton PS won with 56 points. Dunblane PS came second with 26 and St Mary’s EPS thirdwith 14. Central Athletic Club have been presented with a cheque for £690 by ClubSport Stirling.

The club had applied for funding towards their hurdling programme, which they have used to invest in new hurdles for their junior athletes.

Iain Cuthbertson, Vice-Chairperson of ClubSport Stirling, was welcomed along to their training night to present the club their cheque.

Cameron Smith, a volunteer coach with Central, said: “We are extremely grateful to ClubSport Stirling for the award and delighted we have been able to put this towards our hurdling programme.”

Ruth Henderson, Active Stirling’s Club Development Officer, said: “This award for Central Athletic Club is very deserving, demonstrating they are a club with great ambition and people.”
