For sale sign up on church
A historic former church in the centre of Doune is up for sale for more than £150,000.
The 196–year old former Kilmadock Parish Church in Moray Street has been placed on the market, listed as a ‘one bedroom detached house for sale’.
The property is being sold on behalf of the owner by estate agent Halliday Homes of Bridge of Allan.
The category B listed former church, which was built in 1822, was constructed in Ashlar stone and includes a three bay tower with original working clock and bells.
The south facing entrance has a finely carved Moray coat-of-arms over doorway.
The property was listed on the online real estate portal Right Move this week. The website lists the building as a “rare opportunity”, adding: “Located through the large welcoming vestibule is the main entrance hallway where there are two sweeping stone staircases giving access to the upper floors, two doorways into the main church hall, a WC and a stairwell to the basement where the old boiler room is.
“Within the main church hall there are many of the original features, such as, the organ, stained glass windows and ornate cornicing.”
To the rear of the church hall is a double bedroom, as well as the original raised, tear balcony and seating that is accessed from the first floor.
On the first floor there are two fully re–plastered and decorated rooms which split the front facing stained glass window, one with a rope going through the ceiling to the bells in the room above.
A spiral staircase from the first floor leads up to the roof space and a further staircase leads to the church clock tower itself.
The church became a listed building in October 1971.
It was designed by architect, James Gillespie Graham, in 1822 and was refurnished 1896.
There is a graveyard to north of the building, with head stones dating back to the late 18th century and onwards.
The church was also known as Kilmadock East Church as there was a church at the west end of the village.
In 2008 the congregation moved to a new place of worship on Balkerach Street and this is the new Kilmadock Parish Church.
It’s requested that all offers be submitted by a Scottish solicitor in formal legal terms to Halliday Homes.
