Green Routes At the next open day at the Walled Gar­den, Gart­more House on Sun­day, July 29 from 10.30am, Tim Stewart from Ben­view Nurs­ery will lead a work­shop on the bud-graft­ing of ap­ple trees. This is a free work­shop with root-stocks and other re­sources sup­plied and in­cludes a buf­fet lunch and refreshments with de­li­cious home-bak­ing. Ac­com­pa­nied chil­dren will be wel­come and can join in with the wide va­ri­ety of other gar­den­ing ac­tiv­i­ties. St Mary’s Scot­tish Epis­co­pal Church Holy Com­mu­ni­ion at Sun­day at 8am (Angli­can Book of Com­mon Prayer) at St An­thony’s RC Church, Balfron and 11.15am at St Mary’s. The judg­ing for the gar­den com­pe­ti­tion will take place on Fri­day, July 20 from noon on­wards. It is still not too late to put your gar­den for­ward, or to nom­i­nate your neigh­bours gar­den, ap­pli­ca­tions for this, along with the ac­tual show sched­ules are in the vil­lage shop. The po­tora­mas will also be judged at this time, again please put your pot out into one of the sug­gested ar­eas so it isn’t missed when the gar­dens are be­ing judged. En­tries for both of these cat­e­gories have been fall­ing over the last few years and the com­mit­tee re­ally needs your sup­port in or­der to con­tinue with this vil­lage event.

Thorn­hill Play­ers Thorn­hill Play­ers and Friends are again tak­ing part in Cal­lan­der Sum­mer­fest this year. The evening’s per­for­mance starts with a jolly Vic­to­rian drama ‘Curses, Foiled Again’ and then, af­ter a short in­ter­val, fol­lows with a Va­ri­ety Show, some­thing for all the fam­ily to en­joy. The show will be per­formed at McLaren High School on Fri­day, July 20. The doors and a li­cenced bar will open at 7pm with the per­for­mance start­ing at 7.30pm and fin­ish­ing around 10pm. Tick­ets will be on sale at the Sum­mer­fest box of­fice and through the web­site. Nor­rieston Church Sun­day wor­ship will take place on Sun­day at the usual time of 10am and will be con­ducted by the min­is­ter, Rev Ellen Larson David­son. Af­ter the ser­vice the Traid­craft stall will be in busi­ness in the church hall and tea, cof­fee and bis­cuits will be on hand. Gar­den­ing So­ci­ety This year’s sched­ules have now been de­liv­ered round the im­me­di­ate vil­lage. There are some in the vil­lage store for any­one out­with the vil­lage who would like to en­ter the show in Septem­ber. Please note the clos­ing date for the gar­den com­pe­ti­tions is now July 23.
