Sailing club celebrates its 50th annual regatta in style
FRANDY (Gleneagles) On the individual bank returns, top local anglers were Derek Fowler (Dunipace) who caught and released 16; Raymond Pirrie (Tullibody) released 10, Andy Hunter (Alloa) released 19 and Raymond, on a return visit, caught and released 11.
Fishing from the boats, best local bags were: Bill Ramage (Alva) four for 9lb and 19 released; Alan Bernard (Tillicoultry) released nine; Louis Hansen and Stan Guzik (Sauchie) eight for 17lb 8oz and 27 released; Greig Donaldson (Alloa) five for 10lb and seven released.
The angling clubs had some good results with the Dundee West End AC keeping 37 fish weighing 74lb 14oz; BP AC had 27 fish weighing 60lb 10oz and six released and Paisley Patterns AC took 18 fish weighing 38lb 2oz.
Best catching flies and lures included the Daddy Longlegs, Hoppers, Sedge Muddlers Sedge Patterns and the Hothead Damsel whilst all areas continue to fish well. ORCHILL TROUT FISHERY (Braco) The water is fishing from the top with dries to about three feet with either a “quick quick”or a“very very”slow retrieve. The fish are slowly coming back to normal after being cooked in too warm water for three months.
Vale AC had good day taking 32 fish for 71lbs 8oz with Matt McSporran and John McCaree winning with four for 10lbs 4oz.
Killin AC caught 17 fish for 34lbs 8oz with the best catch coming from David McLarty who took three for 9lbs.
Other local catches were Robert Chalmers (Bannockburn) one for 2lbs 8oz on a Kate McLaren and young Harrison McGregor from Dunblane had his first fish – a beauty that tipped the scales at 3lbs. SWANSWATER FISHERY As the water temperature continues to drop the fishing continues to improve, although there are still times when it is hard to tempt the fish. The fish were at varying depths this week – at times they were just below the surface but at other times they were being caught around five feet down.
The Golds are always a good indicator as to where the fish are, being visible in the top three feet; if they can’t be seen then it is an indication that all the fish are sitting deeper. Fish were being taken all round the main pond but the dam area and the boats tended to be better than other parts. A wide variety of flies were working with anything from lures fished deep to nymphs and wets fished higher in the water to dries taking fish. Favourite patterns included Tadpole, Dancer, Humungus, Damsel, Buzzer, Bloodworm, Montana, Cormorant, Soldier Palmer and Black Pennel.
Best local bags: Douglas Murray (Bridge of Allan) 6lb Rainbow; Mick Stubberfield (Stirling) in two visits, three Tigers for 10lb 8oz; Brian McPeake (Gargunnock) three for 9lb 4oz including two Tigers, one at 4lb, and a Gold; Alan Whitton (Stirling) three for 8lb 8oz including two Tigers; Marius Botezatu (Stirling) three Tigers for 8lb, plus five released. GLENBERVIE FISHERY This week the wind picked up, there was a lot of rain and it started to be a lot cooler. In this miserable condition few good trout have been caught.
This week on fly: Ronnie Crossan nine; Tom Turnbull and David Ford eight; Max Drummond and Geordie Penn six; Ally Bruce five; Alan McGregor and Kevin Hanlon four; Stephen Gunn three; Alex Gordon, Hamish Carmichael and Bob Young two each.
The most successful patterns this week: Pheasant Till Nymph, Diawl Bach, Yellow Dancer, Ally McCoist, Mini Muddler, various Buzzers and Hoppers.
On bait: white powerbait on the bottom seems to be doing well: Martin Haddow landed four; John Love and George Wilson caught three each and William Morrison caught two. LAKE OF MENTEITH FISHERY A total of 816 fish have been stocked this week that is the stocking completed for the National Final tomorrow.
Some fine looking fish coming off the water just now with quite a few boats well into double figures. It has been a windy week so pulling is always a good option. Floaters and sink tip lines have worked well and the flies have ranged from lures to dries. Good luck to all on Saturday. Loch Ard Sailing Club held its 50th annual regatta recently with six races over two days in weather which saw good winds and sun on the Saturday and more challenging winds and rain 24 hours later.
John Cooper, the club’s first Commodore in 1968, presented a special 50th Regatta Winner’s Trophy to Calum Robertson and also generously presented the club with a new Commodores’name board.
Calum took the trophy in his Streaker dinghy from Rob Cordingley’s Flying Fifteen Silver keelboat, crewed by Oscar Wingate, and Robert Signer (RS Quba pro dinghy).
On the Sunday afternoon, there was also an informal three-race series for young beginners in Optimist dinghies. The young people enjoyed the challenge of competition and coping with changing sailing conditions. Jonah Bracciali was first with Archie Gordon second and Siena Vladimirov third.
Everyone enjoyed a bring-andshare buffet organised by Sue Signer, club treasurer, after the presentations.
