Blast topples tree into roof

-

destroying a silver Toyota Yaris, and damaging the roof of the Co-op in Cambusbarron on Wednesday afternoon.

As much of Stirling area was battered by the strong winds, many communities saw key roads closed as a result of fallen trees.

The tree at the shop in The Brae was blown over at around 12.30pm on Wednesday.

The monster tree, believed to be around 50– year-old, fell onto the store from private land, damaging the outside of the building, causing superficial damage to the roof and guttering and damaging the internal air conditioning system.

Much of the impact of the tree’s fall was taken by the Toyota which belonged to a female staff member. The car’s entire front end was crushed.

Immediately following the incident, staff closed the store for safety reasons, as workers with chainsaws began chopping up the tree and removing it.

Unbelievably, the store was re–opened at around 6pm that same day.

A spokesperson for the Co-op said: “The store in Cambusbarron re–opened early on Wednesday evening after the tree was safely removed. The safety and security of our colleagues, customers and members is always our top priority and we’d like to thank the local community for their patience during the short closure.”

On Thursday, workers remained at the store, as the vehicle was loaded on to a flatbed truck to be taken away. Workers also began repairs to the store’s roof.

The store remained quiet on Thursday morning, with few customers venturing in.

Cambusbarron Co-op only opened to the public last November, having been built at a cost of £503,000, on the site of the former village social club in The Brae.
