Skipper urges Binos to target third win in a row

- David Ogilvie

Stirling Albion are bidding to make it three wins in a row on Saturday when they welcome Annan Athletic to Forthbank.

Dave Mackay’s men followed up their recent 3–0 victory at Elgin by beating Queen’s Park 1–0 last weekend, ending a home drought going back to February.

Annan were joint–top of the Ladbrokes League 2 table at the end of August but have lost their last two games to Clyde and leaders Edinburgh City, both by 2–1 margins.

Stirling beat Annan 3–0 when the sides last met at Forthbank in February and have an excellent home record against the Peter Murphy-managed Galabankies.

Albion this week completed the signing of 19–year old Hamilton Accies midfielder Ronan Hughes on loan until January while ex–St Mirren midfielder Evan Horne is set to complete his signing early next week.

Horne, who spent time on loan at Annan last season, could again feature as a trialist tomorrow after an impressive performance against Queen’s Park.

Skipper Ross McGeachie was on target against Annan in February and scored his first goal since then to sink the Spiders last week in what turned out to be long– serving manager Gus MacPherson’s last game in charge of the visitors before he left to take up the role as technical director at St Mirren.

McGeachie said: “It was a big win for us against Queen’s Park. I’m good for about one goal a season. I thought Jordan Allan’s corner was going over my head but I stretched and managed to get something on it and when I looked up the ball was in the net.

“We weren’t as good in the second half as we were in the first but we managed to grind it out and all that matters is getting the three points.

“I didn’t realise it had been so long since we won a home game but hopefully we can go on a run now, given that we have won our last two games against Elgin and Queen’s Park.

“We can definitely start climbing the table. Edinburgh City have had a great start but there’s no reason why we can’t catch them – it’s a long season.”

Meanwhile, Albion’s reserve side are in action this Monday, September 24, when they face Airdrieonians at the Penny Cars Stadium, with a 7.30pm kick–off.

Andy Todd’s team were beaten 1-0 by Reserve League 2 leaders Queen’s Park on the Forthbank Astro on Monday.

Albion will also discover their Scottish Cup opponents when the draw for the second round is made at around 5.45pm on Saturday.

Second-round ties are due to be played on the weekend of October 20. Dave Mackay’s men suffered a shock 5-3 home defeat to Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale last season and will be determined to avoid another early exit.

ALBION LOTTO This week’s Albion Lotto numbers are 1, 4, 5, 28. No jackpot winner so next week’s jackpot is £5,600. Five players matched three numbers to win £50 each.
