Goalie Iain hangs up his gloves

Former Everton star retires

Former Everton and Stirling Albion goalkeeper Iain Turner from Kippen has retired from the game.

And the 34 year-old former Balfron High pupil has marked the occasion by donating a Scotland jersey to a football park in Kippen, where he started the game.

Iain wore the top when he was part of the successful Scotland squad, captained by David Weir, which won the Kirin Cup Tournament held in Japan in 2006.

The jersey will be displayed in the pavilion at the Kippen Football Park.

In addition to call-ups to Scotland squads, Iain won six Scotland under-21 caps and had one Scotland B call-up in a career which started at Binos in 2002-03 .

He played for 15 clubs most of them as a loan player during eight seasons at Premier League club Everton where he struggled to get first team game time because of ever-present keeper Tim Howard.

Iain retired last season after eight appearances in National League North for Southport where he was both player and goalkeeping coach.

He said: “My football career started in Kippen so it seemed the right thing to do to donate the jersey to the Kippen Sports Development Group who manage the facilities at the park.

“I hope it might help inspire some of the boys and girls to follow in my footsteps”.

Accepting the top, chair of Kippen Sports Development Paul Goodwin said: “It was a real pleasure to meet Iain and to hear about the successful Kirin Cup campaign.

“It is not too often that we hear about Scotland winning tournaments so it makes it rather special.

“We would like to thank Iain for the kind gesture on behalf of everyone in Kippen.

“This is a community facility and we try to keep it live and active but it’s a struggle because it costs us £2000 a year just to open the doors. So anything to get the name up there and inspire people to use the facility is helpful.”
