An overwhelming win for the Castle
Doune secure cup place after monumental 9-1 victory
Doune Castle .......... 9 Sporting Saughton .. 1
Doune recovered from an early scare to cruise past their Edinburgh opponents to reach the third round of the East of Scotland Cup.
And it was only an inspired performance from the Sporting keeper which prevented the Castle from recording a landslide win.
Totally against the run of play Sporting took a 1-0 lead on 13 minutes when a deflected shot flew past Adam Smulski.
They only held the lead for five minutes when the keeper came out to smother the ball but allowed it to slip from his grasp. Robert Purves walked it into the unguarded net.
Two more goals in six minutes had Castle back on track. Alan Inglis headed home a Sean Wilbert cross then John Marshall broke ahead of the defence to clip the ball beyond the keeper.
Before the break, Lukasz Duszynski made it 4-1 and Inglis scored his second.
Marshall made it 6-1 after 57 minutes. David Innes cushioned the ball into his path and he wasted no time in dispatching the ball home with a clinical 10-yard finish.
Doune made it 7-1 on 77 minutes. Andy Mann fired a corner from the right and Wilbert’s header from 10 yards crashed in off the underside of the bar.
Wilbert scored his second and Doune’s eighth in 85 minutes and Purves rounded off the scoring with a neat finish two minutes into added time.
Doune clinically overwhelmed their Edinburgh opponents, without ever really hitting top gear, producing pockets of sparkling football and scored good goals as they progressed to the competition’s last 32.
