Grant for sensory garden

-

A sensory garden is to be established in Sauchie thanks to a £20,000 grant from the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The community garden, which it is hoped will open in April, is to include paths and spaces to grow vegetables and flowers.

It will be run by Sauchie Gardening Group, an offshoot of Sauchie Community Group, formed in October last year.

Sauchie Community Group applied for funding for the 11 Mar Place project earlier this year and were recently awarded £19,860 from the Postcode Local Trust – a grant-giving trust funded entirely by the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The Sauchie garden will be accessible to all, but it is especially aimed at people suffering from dementia. It will also be used as an educational resource for children.

Flo Mackenzie from Sauchie Gardening Group said:“We have had a very positive response from residents and businesses in the village and are look forward to this exciting project.

“Many of the residents are no longer able to maintain a garden of their own and it will be wonderful for them to have this place to gather and hopefully take part in the maintenance of the site.

“We also look forward to welcoming children to plant and grow vegetables and flowers in the garden, educating them in the fact that all carrots and potatoes do not come from the grocery store.

“We’d like to thank the People’s Postcode Lottery and Postcode Local Trust for this generous funding and we look forward to proceeding with the garden within the next few weeks.”

Sauchie Community Group has been working on sprucing up Sauchie in general and the sensory garden is the next stage of their work.

Ms Mackenzie added:“A few members felt that Sauchie could do with a bit of a facelift and proceeded during the year to supply and maintain 27 barrels of flowers placed throughout the Main Street and plant 1400 daffodil bulbs in green spaces.”
