- Donald Morton

Bruce is set to lead his troops into battle at Bannockburn once more - this time on the rugby field.

Bannockburn RFC have appointed Calum Bruce as club captain after serving three years as vice-captain.

The 25 year-old has been playing for the Bluebellwood side since 2011 and takes over from Mark Wetton in the role.

“I’ve been a Bannockburn player since I was 18 years old,” said the former Wallace High School pupil,“so to be appointed club captain is a huge honour.

“It’s an exciting time for Bannockburn.

“Senior squad player numbers are booming and our junior teams are going from strength to strength.

“I’m looking forward to playing a part in taking the club forward.”

Club president Kevin McCormack (pictured right with Calum) said:“Calum was the clear choice to lead the squad and the committee is delighted he accepted the position.

“He’s developed into a great player and a real positive influence on his team mates.

“We’d also like to thank his predecessor Mark Wetton who did a fantastic job as captain over the last four seasons.

“His contribution to the club won’t be forgotten and we wish Mark the best for the future.”

Calum’s debut as captain was delayed on Saturday when scheduled opponents Glenrothes 2nds had to cancel their Tennent’s Caledonia Midlands Division Four match through lack of numbers.

On Saturday he will be in charge for the first time when Bannockburn head to Bo’ness.
