Historical match set for Bridge of Allan club

- RJ Mitchell

History will be made at Minewood tonight (Wednesday) when Bridge of Allan Sports Club’s firsts face the seconds for the first time ever in an East of Scotland League match.

The two sides, sponsored by the Allanwater Brewhouse, sit in fifth and sixth places in the top tier with the first team leading by two points.

Top match features European Championship bronze medallist Dougie Kempsell and the seconds’unbeaten No 1 Fergus Richards and firsts skipper Iain Logan said:“This is the one everyone at the club has been looking forward to and also the match neither side wants to lose. With only two points between us and both sides coming off our first defeats of the campaign it is a classic double pointer.”

He added:“There is no doubt that the top of the order clash between Dougie and Fergus will be a classic and I hope we get a good turnout from the club members.”

Second team captain Robin Bairner added:“I believe this match will be won or lost in the lower order and with battle hardened guys like Andy Meldrum and Martin Jack in there fighting for us I think we have a chance.”

Elsewhere the ladies hope to continue their unbeaten start and stretch their lead at the top of East Division One when they head to ESC2.

Captain Sheena Logan said:“We have extra depth this season with the emergence of Lucy Murchie who was superb last week in posting a straight sets win at the top of the order and we travel to the capital determined to keep our unbeaten start.”

Meanwhile the thirds have the week off after their trip to Dunbar was rearranged. Last week skipper Stewart Penman was relieved after his side’s unbeaten start to the Division Four campaign remained intact following a tense 3-2 victory over Mamma’s Pizzeria.

He said:“It was our toughest test of the season and we did really well to come through with great wins from Ben Orr, Kyle Penman and Bert Mitchell clinching the decider.

It was also great to give young Ollie Hunter his debut at just 12 years old.”
