Focus on history of Thornhill

Second edition of book

- Alastair McNeill

A new expanded edition of a book on Thornhill’s rich history will be launched in the village next weekend.

Historian Stuart James McCulloch has expanded ‘On the Edge of Everywhere’ which he first published in 1996, in a new edition.

The first edition of the book was originally conceived to mark the village’s tercentenary in 1996.

It covered the village’s history from the Iron Age and through the time of Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots, Jacobite rebellion and beyond.

The launch, an allday event, takes place at Thornhill Community Hall and will feature speakers, entertainment and refreshments.

Stuart James McCulloch, formerly of the village who now lives in Dumfriesshire, will give a talk at 7.30pm.

The revised version was the idea of villager Joyce Firth of the Thornhill Views newsletter team.

She explained: “There was a lot of interest in local history articles in the newsletter and people kept asking about the first edition which was out of print. So with Stuart’s fantastic support we’ve produced a great read which will be the definitive history of the village for many years to come.”

Mr McCulloch was also keen to be given the opportunity to expand the first edition which he described as “rather rushed.”

Mr McCulloch added: “Although it took a long time to put this second edition together, I’m not taking anything for it.

“I just hope people read and enjoy the book and it gives something back to the community of which I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of.”

All proceeds from the book will help fund Thornhill Views’ printing costs, as well as other local causes.

‘On the Edge of Everywhere’ will be available from the Thornhill Village Store for £10 from November 12.

The free all-day event is supported by Thornhill Community Trust and Thornhill and Blairdrummond Community Council.

It has also been awarded a grant from Stirling Council Community Pride Fund .
