New bank lease but doors close

Rental deal until March

- Chris Marzella

RBS has renewed the lease on its Bannockburn branch – even though it is to close next week.

On Wednesday the Observer reported that the outlet in Quakerfield will shut on Monday, however, it has now come to light that the banking giant has extended its rental agreement on the building until March 29 next year.

But customers will be disappointed as the branch is still to close as planned on Monday.

It’s understood that the banking giant extended its lease in September by six months in order to decommission the building before moving out.

Whilst the bank will have legal occupancy of the unit, the branch will not be open to customers.

The shutting of the branch comes on the back of closures of the branches at Bridge of Allan and Dunblane earlier this year.

Bannockburn’s bank was initially to close on June 25, while the bank’s outlet in Pitt Terrace, Stirling, is to relocate.

The Pitt Terrace branch is to move to the Murray Place entrance of the Thistles Centre, in a unit formerly occupied by Costa and another business, on Wednesday, November 14.

More than 2000 people signed an online petition to save the Bannockburn branch. It was then given a five-month reprieve until November 12.

The raft of closures has come as part of a plan by the banking giant to axe 62 branches nationwide.

The post office in Main Street, Bannockburn, is due to provide a number of financial services once the RBS branch closes.

However, the future of the post office was left in doubt after the postmaster announced that he is to retire in the new year.
