Glad of help with Cenotaph

- Chris Marzella

Stirling Council workers helped a community group carry out work to spruce up a war memorial in time for Remembrance Sunday.

Bannockburn Community Council raised cash to help with the planting out of winter bedding at Bannockburn Cenotaph before Sunday’s poignant centenary commemorations.

Community councillors enlisted the help of staff from the council’s land services team in order to carry out the work.

Provision of winter display plants was scrapped to save money.

Community representatives last week thanked the council staff for their assistance.

A Stirling Council spokesperson this week said:“The work carried out by our land services team and Bannockburn Community Council underlines the benefits of partnership working in Stirling.

“The community council raised money, presented their plans and we were happy to help cater to the community’s wishes, especially in relation to the cenotaph prior to this period of historic remembrance for all those who fell in the First World War.”

Explaining the decision to no longer provide winter display beds, the spokesperson added:“The prolonged, adverse weather commonly witnessed in Scottish winters had a detrimental effect on these displays, which often fell victim to severe frosts and heavy snow fall.

“As such, our focus shifted to maximising the aesthetic appearance of our summer displays, which benefit from better weather, longer hours of sunlight and form a key part of Stirling’s visual appeal in the summer months during peak tourist season.”
