Bridge parapet sparks petition

Locals unhappy at concrete slab

- Kaiya Marjoribanks

People in Dunblane are said to be“horrified”by a concrete parapet erected by Network Rail following work on Perth Road bridge.

The bridge was raised as part of the operator’s electrification project.

However, townsfolk are unhappy that the grey concrete slab - likened to a World War Two concrete bunker - does not match the “attractive” stone parapet on the south side of the bridge.

A petition has been lodged with Stirling Council, whose environment and housing committee will consider the concerns tomorrow.

Spokesperson for the petitioners, Frederick Trott, said: “It is unlikely Network Rail will do anything to improve the situation but I hope this petition will encourage Stirling Council, with the support of Dunblane Community Council, to investigate ways of disguising the grey slabs by painting, cladding or some other form of landscaping so they become less obtrusive.

“Even some artwork by one of Banksy’s followers would be an improvement.”

Stirling Council officials are said to have inspected the parapet work and entered into discussions with Network Rail over the material and construction methods used.

In their report for tomorrow’s hearing they say: “Due to the poor aesthetic and structural condition of the northern parapet wall, a decision was made to fully replace the northern parapet, as opposed to attaching a parapet extension.”

They add that during consultations the local community council were asked their views on two options and chose the concrete parapet - the other being two courses of brickwork.

Retrofit of stone onto the northern parapet is said to be not possible as pieces could become detached from the parapet and become a projectile if struck by a vehicle.

Heavier work may require a full reassessment of the existing bridge’s foundations.
