- Kaiya Marjoribanks

sPupils from Dollar Academy took part in an open-air Ceremony of Remembrance last Friday to mark 100 years since the end of the FirstWorld War.

The special assembly, which took place in front of the school’s war memorial, offered students and staff the opportunity to commemorate those who lost their lives in conflict during and since the FirstWorldWar.

This was complemented by a ceramic poppy installation featuring over a thousand ceramic poppies which were made, dipped and glazed by every pupil at the school. The ceremony included a lone piper, a CCF bugler playing The Last Post and a twominute silence.

Following an opening address by the Rector, David Knapman, who included a prayer for peace, there were readings, music from the Chamber Choir, and a special tribute paid by pupils in Form IV who read out the names of the 161 former pupils known to have lost their lives in WW1.

Dollar Academy’s Westwater Building, completed in 2015 and housing Modern Languages and Economics, commemorated five pupils who lost their lives on the first day of the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915.

Dollar former pupil Private GeorgeWestwater was one of those killed, aged just 21, almost exactly 100 years to the day prior to the completion of the building.

Dollar Academy will continue its commemorations on Friday evening in the Gibson Auditorium with a lecture from Professor Ewen Cameron, the Sir William Fraser Professor of Scottish History and Palaeography and Head of School at the University of Edinburgh.

Professor Cameron will give a talk on the Great War and its impact on Scotland and there will also be music and readings performed by Dollar Academy pupils.
