Photo sparked Lego memories
Dear Editor
I write regarding the photograph in Memory Lane in a September issue of the Observer featuring the four young Lego competition winners taken in Debenhams in September 1978.
My brother Thomas Gordon is second right in the picture with the black trousers and jumper and fantastic large-collared shirt.
He was one of the winners of the competition for which he built either a crane or an oil rig, which is spooky as he went on as an adult to work all his life in the oil industry and is currently in Majnoon, Iraq, overseeing work there.
He recalls that world champion darts player Eric Bristow was there the day the photograph was taken and Thomas had the opportunity to play darts with him.
My mother was over the moon when Thomas won the competition but the paper printed his name wrong in the edition in which the photograph appeared, which he wasn’t best pleased about.
We thought Debenhams was the most exciting fantastic shop at the time and believed Stirling had really arrived with it opening!!
The Lego set won by Thomas brought us hours of entertainment, and it was great to see the photo published in the Observer, bringing back fond memories. The Memory Lane page is fantastic and it’s great to see the fashions etc of the day. I’m sure a lot of people enjoy reading it.
