Young Kyle pulls out all the stops to help land valuable points

-

Bridge of Allan thirds are still in the East of Scotland Division Four title mix – despite a battling 3-2 defeat at Dunbar.

The Allanwater Brewhouse-sponsored side were spearheaded by Scotland Under-15 international Kyle Penman, who made his debut at the top of the order for the first time.

But with resources stretched, ladies aces Karen Robertson and Pauline Douglas and club president Walter McAllister were all called into action.

Skipper Stewart Penman was delighted with the 11 valuable points that have restored his side to second place and taken the Minewood outfit back to within five points of leaders Watsonians going into the festive break.

Stewart said: “It was absolutely vital that with this being our game in hand we made the most of it. And, although we lost, to have Walter McAllister then just came up short in a torrid fivesetter at No 3.

At No 4 there was another case of so near yet so far when Pauline Douglas was edged out 16-14 in another five set epic before Kyle Penman took to the court.

Although the match was lost already, young Kyle fought every inch of the way to claim a five-set win to ensure the thirds picked up 11 valuable points.

The first team trip to Colinton Castle was called off due to a flu epidemic and Iain Logan’s men go into the festive break placed eighth with a game in hand that could take them as high as fourth if they prevail in the rescheduled fixture.

With the seconds sitting second bottom of Division One a grim second-half relegation battle forecast.

However, the ladies side finished the first-half of their campaign impressively positioned second just 15 points behind leaders Edinburgh University with the title still up for grabs.
