NEW THREAT TO SCHOOLS

Cash crisis could close two primaries

-

A struggling council this week tabled proposals to shut two primary schools and cut the hours of secondary pupils in a bid to plug an £11million funding gap.

If the moves go ahead, Coalsnaughton and Fishcross primaries will close and Clackmannanshire Council’s three secondary schools will lose two and a half hours a week.

Officials say the council’s current budget requirement for 2019/20 will be around £124m but the funding it’s expected to receive will be around £113m – an £11 million deficit.

Other proposals include a three per cent increase in Council Tax, 2.8 per cent rise in charges, cuts in funding to community groups and food banks, withdrawal of subsidies to bus services and changes to school transport provision.
