The Observer had just the thing for readers wishing to fortify themselves for the year ahead.

Our recipe of the week in early January, 1969, was kidney Romanoff.

This meaty dish contained six lambs kidneys, half a pound of chipolata sausages, four rashers of streaky bacon –‘made into eight rolls’- an onion, quarter of a pound of mushrooms, four tablespoon­s of Heinz olive oil and one 15 and a half ounce can of Heinz cream of tomato soup .

A glass of dry sherry was added to the mix and the dish, meant for a family of four, was served with rice.
