BANNOCKBURN 111–10 GLENROTHES 2ND XV

Bannockburn made a roaring start to the New Year with a thumping victory over Glenrothes 2nd XV on Saturday in a Tennent’s Caledonia Midlands Division Four match.

The Bluebellwood side ran in 17 tries, including a hat-trick for debutant Andy Chambers, as they recorded their most emphatic win in front of a healthy home support.

Opening exchanges were fairly even but a couple of injuries to a young travelling Glenrothes side seemed to upset their balance and Bannockburn’s better game management proved decisive.

Inside centre Chambers completed a first-half hat-trick of tries with further scores for Iain Duncan (2), Jimmy Samuel, Jack Cowie and Stephen Taylor helping ‘Burn to a 52-10 lead at the break.

There was no let-up in the second half. Stuart McGown, Mark Wetton, Samuel (again), Davie Davidson, Rob Blunden, David Grainey (2), Mark Alexander (2) all added to the points tally as the home side took the score into three figures.

Captain Callum Bruce said:“I’m very proud of the lads. Our attacking and support play was fantastic. Next up is a tough game against Dunfermline 2nd XV, who have already clinched the league title and we plan to upset their clean sweep as an undefeated team.

“We have five games to go in the league season and this win sets a standard that we must maintain through to the end of the season.”

The man of the match award was shared between club stalwarts Mark Wetton, playing in the unfamiliar position of lock, and veteran prop Iain McEwan.
