£37m upgrade at factory completed

- ALASTAIR MCNEILL

Stirling glass wool insulation manufacturer Superglass has completed the £37 million redevelopment of its Springkerse manufacturing site.

The investment, the largest in Scottish engineering and manufacturing in recent years, was announced in December 2017.

Now complete, it will double the Thistle Industrial Estate site’s capacity to around 60,000 tonnes of glass wool insulation annually, creating 20 new jobs.

It follows the £8.7m takeover of Superglass in 2016 by TECHNONICOL, which is owned by Russian businessman Sergey Kolesnikov.

The TECHNONICOL group of companies is the largest manufacturer of construction materials in Russia and Eastern Europe. Chief executive of TECHNONICOL International for Western Europe and North America, Ken Munro, who is based at Springkerse, said: “This multi-million-pound investment is a real vote has helped us continue to grow and return to profit.

“We have been pleased to be able to work with a number of local engineering companies to deliver the project, which will have had a further beneficial effect on the (Stirling area) economy.

“As developers, builders and ultimately housebuyers become more environmentally aware, energy efficiency becomes an even more valued feature for newbuilds, so we anticipate demand for insulation to continue to grow.”

The redevelopment of Superglass’ Stirling manufacturing facility was supported with a Scottish Enterprise grant of £477,000 in 2017.

Glass wool insulation produced by Superglass is made from up to 84 per cent recycled glass and is estimated to save around 300 times the amount of energy used to manufacture it.
