Ladies team reach for East League title

-

Bridge of Allan Sports Club ladies team co-captain Karen Roberston has banned all title talk at Minewood.

The girls, sponsored by The Birds and The Bees, look to take their unbeaten run at the top of the East of Scotland Squash Ladies top tier to eight matches when they head to fifth place Waverley tonight (Wednesday).

After a 5-0 thrashing of defending champions Edinburgh University at Minewood last week the gap at the summit increased to a staggering 34 points with just three league games left until the festive break.

But Robertson (pictured) , an impressive winner at No.3, has warned her girls against complacency as they chase a first-ever league championship.

She said: “We are delighted to have taken the unbeaten run to seven matches and also to have beaten our main rivals Edinburgh University.

“It was a great team effort with Sabine Mackenzie and Lucy Murchie both convincing straight sets winners at the top of the order and Anna Halliday and Debbie Gillespie also impressive in victory at four and five respectively.

“The target is to go into the break unbeaten and as far in front as possible and from that point of view there can be no room for complacency and it’s way too early to be talking about titles.”

Meanwhile the men’s firsts will look to bounce back from a tight 3-2 loss at ESC1 when they host Grange 1 at Minewood tomorrow (Thursdsay).

Skipper Iain Logan said: “Unfortunately we are missing young Kyle Penman for the next two weeks and that is a disappointment as he recorded another fine win at ESC last time out.

“But there is nothing in it in terms of our bid to crack the top three for the first time and it’s vital we make the most of home advantage against a Grange team who are sitting at the bottom of the table and struggling for form.”

The seconds also badly need to find some form when they host second placed Watsonians at Minewood tonight (Wednesday).

Captain Robin Bairner said: “We took a sore one from the leaders Waverley, but they are exceptionally strong throughout their order and are clear favourites for the Division 2 title. That said it’s vital we bounce back against Watsonians.”

Elsewhere the thirds head to Dunfermline tomorrow (Thursday) determined to get a victory that could take them into the top three.

“For the first time we will field a fullstrength team for the trip to Fife,” said skipper Bert Mitchell. “The competition for places in the team can really help kick us on and we are ideally placed at this stage of the campaign.”

Meanwhile the fourths will look to bounce back to winning ways after successive setbacks to Mariner and Crieff when they head to Stirling Squash Club tomorrow (Thursday) in the Crieff and District Leagues.
