Trainer gives us take on claims about cyclists

Dear Editor

lane for a safe overtake. If there is oncoming traffic the driver needs to wait until it is safe. If there is a bunch of cyclists riding single file, the driver will be on the other side of the road for longer. When it is busy with lots of oncoming traffic, cyclists riding in pairs are being considerate and making it easier for safe overtaking as drivers don’t need to use the other side of the road for as long.

There were further complaints about cyclists weaving through traffic. Highway code rule 151 says in slow traffic be aware of cyclists and motorcyclist who may be passing on either side. Rule 160 warns drivers to be aware of cyclists and motor cyclists who may be filtering and give them plenty of room.

I have heard drivers complain about cyclists wearing black. At night and if visibility is below 100 metres cyclists must use lights. In winter – with low sun, white frosty hedges and fields and gritted roads – wearing black may be the best way to contrast with your background. A school crossing patroller was killed in Waterlooville a few years own – carried the legitimacy of the UK as a unitary state (Scotland has still to achieve Independence); anything else is meaningless. Nevertheless, the political atmosphere at the moment is such that this truly democratic referendum vote could be destroyed. If that was to happen, it will confirm a massive democratic chasm in the UK. For the first time in my life I am unlikely to vote. I believe in democracy.

ago and the police accident investigator said his high-vis jacket made him blend into the low winter sun.

Regarding the complaints about helmets, there is no legal requirement to wear a helmet when riding a push bike.

Some correspondents suggested cyclists should pay to use the roads. However, local roads are paid for by Council Tax and everybody, including cyclists and pedestrians, pay that.

Questions were raised about cyclists having insurance for any damage they cause. Most cyclists do have third party liability insurance. It is included in membership of cycling organisations and many house contents insurance policies.

I would advise people to follow the Highway Code on twitter or Facebook and get a couple of rules posted to their timeline every day. After a year you have had a complete Highway Code refresher for free.
