Caley Marts had 362 store cattle and suckled calves and 403 store lambs at their fortnightl­y sale.

Bullocks averaged 210p pkg and sold to 462p pkg for a Limousin from Easterton, Stirling and to £1200 for the same beast. Heifers averaged 196p pkg and sold to 431p pkg for a Limousin again from Easterton, and to £1250 for the same beast. Black and Whites averaged 144p pkg and sold to 153p pkg from W Baxter, Gryfeside, Kilmacolm and to £800 from the same home.

Other leading prices: Bullocks per head - £1120 Redhall; £1020 and £1010 East Kerse; £1000 Shawbraes; £990 East Kerse. Heifers per head - £1100 Easterton; £990 East Kerse; £960 East Kerse (twice), Wester Braco and Hillhead; £910 Hillhead and Wester Braco. Also forward were 403 store lambs. A smaller show of lambs forward, but all keenly bid for. Top price store lambs sold to £79 for a pen of Texels from W Cook, Balcachie, Girvan.

Caley Marts sold 1998 prime lambs, ewes and tups at its Christmas Show and Sale of Prime Lambs. The show was sponsored by AA Oils, Stirling and ably judged by Steven Brown of R Brown and Son, Quality Butchers, Stenhousem­uir. Awards were:

Beltex: 1 and champion pen - JB Guthrie, Cuiltburn for a pen of 47.6kg lambs at £180 purchased by the judge, Steven Brown; 2 J Taylor, Easter Ochtermuth­ill – 43.6kg £105; 3 L Wilson, Cassindill­y Farm, Ceres, Fife – 55kg £94.

Texel: 1 and reserve champion pen - L Wilson, Cassindill­y Farm for a pen of 54kg lambs at £112 purchased by W Shearer, Burnbrae, Strathaven; 2 T Mitchell, Easter Gormyre – 37.5kg £86; 3 E and O Laboratori­es, South Mains – 48kg £98.

Blackface: 1 Remony Estates – 48.6kg £86; 2 A Higginson, Braeleny – 44.6kg £78; 3 Auchenboth­ie Farmers – 46.6kg £81. Mule: 1 Auchenboth­ie Farmers – 51.6kg £80; 2 Auchenboth­ie Farmers – 49.6kg £76.

Twenty-five pens of show lambs (Texel and Beltex) averaged 223.7p pkg selling to a top of 378p pkg for champion pen. Overall sale average for 1551 sold was 183.5p pkg (-11.3p pkg on week, +4.1p on year).
