OAP DIES TRYING TO CROSS THEROAD

- CHRIS MARZELLA

An elderly Stirling man died after being knocked down by a car in a busy city street on Friday.

Chris Morrison suffered fatal injuries after being struck by the vehicle in Cowane Street at around 10.40am. The 85-year-old sustained serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene . Mr Morrison had been attempting to cross the road, near to the Cowane Centre, to get to a bus stop on the opposite side of the road. At that time he was involved in a collision with a grey Renault Megane, driven by a 31-year-old man, heading in the direction of Stirling city centre.

Police are now appealing

for witnesses to piece together the exact events, which remain unclear. Inspector Andrew Thomson of the Stirling Road Policing Unit, said: “We are supporting the man’s family at this time and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the collision.

“The area was busy at the time of the collision with people shopping and I would ask anyone who may have seen what happened to contact us.

“I would also ask if there are drivers with dash-cam footage which might help with our investigation to call us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Road Policing Unit in Stirling on 101, quoting incident 1066 of December 13.

People in the area at the time of the incident took to social media.

Claire Kaney said: “Passed the scene today, the glare from the sun was bouncing back off the road and totally blinding. Sad to hear this is what happened, Thoughts are with everyone involved.”

Charlene Raybold posted: “So sad was on the bus at the time but didn’t see what happened thoughts go out to his family.”

Isabella Lowe added: “So very sad a true gent one of the nicest man ever so devastating for his lovely family.”

A Top of the Town resident who described Mr Morrison as a “nice quiet guy”, added: “I’m sad to say I’m not surprised there was a fatality there. That road is busy, and fast, with all the traffic coming into, or leaving, the city centre.

“I’m not sure why they only put in a pedestrian crossing at one end of Cowane Street when they were making improvements, because further along, where the accident happened, is just as dangerous.

“Maybe Stirling Council needs to look at putting in another crossing, so that people can cross safely.”
