The losing Conservative candidate Mr Graham said: “It’s never a great result to lose.

“All I would just say, in these jobs you should try and give your everything to represent and stand up for the communities that you live in and you serve in and trying to represent down in Westminster. “I thank my team who have worked tirelessly since I got elected back in 2017.

“There is still plenty going on in Scottish politics and British politics and we are the only party that want to play fair in both, so I look forward to having plenty more action here in Clackmannanshire and in Perth and Kinross.”

Labour’s Lorna Robertson said: “It’s been a disappointing night for the Labour Party. Luckily enough I love my job in the NHS and I will be back there on Monday.”

Liberal Democrat Iliyan Stafanov said: “I have improved the result (from last time, 1742). Maybe in a few more elections me may actually win some day. Congratulations to John for winning.

“We have a strong voice in Parliament now, but we also lost a very strong voice in Parliament.

“I hope Luke continues working for the constituency and we will all be looking to John to deliver on the promises.”

The fifth candidate, Stuart Martin for UKIP who received 382 votes did not appear on the podium for the announcement.
