Fine for drink driver who hit car on A872

-

A drink-driver who hit another car in Stirling was this week fined £600 and disqualified from driving for two years.

Douglas Henderson had admitted a charge of dangerous driving while intoxicated by alcohol on the A872 Glasgow Road and the Borestone roundabout.

The 59-year-old had failed to maintain a proper lookout and collided with the other car causing damage to both vehicles.

At Stirling Sheriff Court on Wednesday, fiscal depute Lindsey Brooks said the driver of the other vehicle was heading north on the A872 Glasgow Road from junction nine of the M9 towards the Borestone roundabout.

Henderson was driving behind the witness’s vehicle. However, the witness became concerned about the manner the car behind her was being driven.

Henderson then struck the rear of the witness’s car.

When she got out to speak to Henderson she formed the impression that he was under the influence of alcohol and police were contacted.

Ms Brooks pointed out that Henderson had admitted to officers that he had been driving the vehicle.

His lawyer told Sheriff William Gilchrist that Henderson only had one previous conviction, for driving without an MoT, and added that the dangerous driving conviction had been “a very sobering experience.”

Henderson had driven under the influence that night because he had received a telephone call from his wife who had been distressed following the death of her mother.

He recognised that driving the car had been an extremely stupid thing to do.

The solicitor also pointed out that “there was not much damage to the other vehicle as I understand it.”

Sheriff William Gilchrist fined Henderson £600 and disqualified him from driving for two years.

The sum was reduced from £900 and the disqualification from three years due to his guilty plea.
