Scandi-Scottish collaboration has climate focus

-

A Scottish theatre company’s collaboration with a Norwegian theatre company will be staged at the Macrobert on Thursday, January 30.

Ragnarok is the latest production from Edinburgh’s multi-awardwinning visual theatre company Tortoise in a Nutshell. It was born out of a collaboration with Norway’s Figurteatret I Nordland.

Told from the perspective of a young girl walking through a dying world and inspired by the issues of climate collapse and migration, the piece aims to absorb and surround audiences, as a team of five performers (Emma Jayne Park, Isabel Sharman, Ella MacKay, Alex Bird and Jim Harbourne) flood the stage with sound, texture and over 200 three inch clay puppets, brought to life via live feed camera.

Based in the small village of Stamsund on the southern side of the northerly archipelago of Lofoten inside the arctic circle, Figurteatret I Nordland played host to the Tortoise in a Nutshell company during autumn to create the production.

The company returned to Scotland to take up residence at Macrobert for final rehearsals before the preview performance at the arts centre – the official premiere takes place at the Manipulate Visual Theatre Festival, Edinburgh, in February.

Ragnarok will mark Tortoise in a Nutshell’s second ‘in association partnership’ with Macrobert Arts Centre.

Macrobert Arts Centre worked with Tortoise in a Nutshell to present Fisk (2018) throughout Scotland and across the UK.
