Award-winning choirinvitation

- TRACY-ANN CARMICHAEL

An award-winning choir has launched a bid to find new members.

Stirling Gaelic Choir hopes to recruit and swell the ranks - and no knowledge of the language is required.

The group, which meets at the Logie Kirk Hall is Causewayhead, was founded in 1948.

As well as members from Stirling and the Forth Valley, the 30-strong choir has attracted singers from as far afield as Perth and Dunfermline.

There are no auditions to join the group, which aims to bring a flavour of Gaelic music, language and heritage to Central region.

Performers are also set to begin their rehearsal schedule ahead of the lynchpin event of the Gaelic choir calendar, the Royal National Mod, which takes place in October.

The Stirling ensemble will look to defend the prestigious Margrat Duncan Memorial Trophy, which they won at the renowned event in both 2018 and 2019.

Most of the singers do not speak Gaelic and say that although learning lyrics may look daunting to start with, they can be easily learned with help of the choir’s Gaelic tutor.

Says conductor Jane McQueen: “You don’t have to speak Gaelic to sing it.”

Prospective members are welcome to attend the drop-in event at the open rehearsal on Wednesday February 5, between 7.30pm and 8.30pm, where they will be welcome to join in with a simple song or just listen with a cup of tea.
