Online service to remember
Commemorations are taking place to mark VE Day, although tailored to the lockdown.
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, events Stirling Council had planned in conjunction with the SSAFA (the Armed Forces Charity) and the British Legion to mark the occasion have been cancelled.
Instead, Stirling residents can take part in an online service of remembrance and a two-minute silence which will lead Scotland’s public commemorations for the landmark anniversary.
The service, led by Legion Scotland and Poppyscotland in partnership with the Scottish Government, will also include children and families currently learning at home, as well as a video message of thanks from the First Minister and a concert.
Stirling Provost Christine Simpson said:“We will not let these challenging times prevent us from continuing to honour our heroes. There will be many families across Stirling who are able to trace a link back to the Second World War, either to someone who fought so bravely on our behalf or tragically lost their lives to secure our freedom.
“VE Day offers an opportunity for us all to remember the enormous sacrifices that were made and to celebrate, as people did 75 years ago, the arrival of peace in Europe.”
The council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Bryan Flannagan said:“The legacy and memory of this important milestone is one that should be kept alive for generations to come. As well as marking the Victory in Europe in 1945, the day will serve as an opportunity to pay tribute to those who have served, and continue to serve, in our Armed Forces and their families.”
The online service starts at 10.39am at www. facebook.com/LegionScotland and www.facebook. com/Poppyscotland. At midday, a further live broadcast, featuring an hour-long tribute concert will be made.
The Royal Naval Association have asked that branch Standards take part in a virtual parade as a mark of respect, commemoration and remembrance.
Standards will be paraded outside some members’ homes at 11am, including at The Firs in Bannockburn, with Royal Naval Association Forth Valley Branch Standard bearer Dave Lewis.
