Heart of Braehead helps feed those in need during crisis

- KAIYA MARJORIBANKS

A community project in Braehead is helping to feed more than 100 families plus individuals in their area.

Heart of Braehead was set up in response to the coronavirus crisis to help feed people in the community who need extra help as well as reduce food waste during the current pandemic - and hopefully beyond.

Spokesperson Fiona Stewart said:“We are running a food waste initiative on Tuesday and Thursday nights from North Parish Church Hall and we received donations from local supermarkets and food manufacturers which is brilliant.

“The volunteer group has been set up to provide food and supplies to those in need, covering all age groups. We also promote food recycling, trying to reduce the amount of food that goes to landfill.

“We operate a food larder as well as the twice weekly food drop in, and provide bags of food to local families on a regular basis, as well as those referred by other charities who cannot support them.”

The volunteers have come up with various ways of not just providing basics and reducing waste, but lifting the spirits of their community.

One of the most recent projects has been handing out free“DVD Night”bags as a treat for local children, with donated DVDs and goodies such as popcorn, candy floss, sweets and juice.

Another popular idea was pizza kit bags, which were for collection at the food drop in at the church.

Stirling Salvation Army also recently fed around 50 people with chilli donated by the volunteers.
