Teachers working on back to school plans

-

Plans for the safe return of children and young people to schools in August are being developed by Stirling Council.

Following the First Minister’s announcements last week, schools will re-open after the summer break on August 11 – one week earlier than scheduled – as part of a national agreement.

This will be subject to scientific advice on the Covid-19 situation at the time.

Staff began returning to Stirling Council schools this week in small groups to create a new learning environment that complies with physical distancing restrictions and other national guidance.

There will be a new combination of in-school and home learning but given the varying sizes, locations and distinct needs of schools across the Stirling Council area, there won’t be a uniform approach in the application of these measures.

Children and young people convener Councillor Susan McGill said:“After the closure of schools in March, our priority throughout the current crisis has been to ensure learning could continue as much as possible through a blended approach of digital tools and paper resources.

“We welcome the news that schools will re-open to children and young people in August, and work is well underway to implement a mix of class-based and at-home learning which meets the specific needs of each setting.

“Our aim will be to provide an enjoyable and enriching learning environment, though the safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff will always come first.”

Vice convener Councillor Christine Simpson added:“We understand how difficult and uncertain a time this has been for families, and we will continue to share information on these new arrangements as plans are finalised over the coming weeks.

“Although the school experience will be different until we emerge from the crisis, we remain committed to providing the highest quality of education for our children and young people so they can achieve their potential.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank parents, carers, children and young people for their patience and support during the pandemic, and also recognise the commitment and hard work of teachers and staff.”

The council added that early learning and childcare settings will open over the summer and updates are expected to be provided on this in due course.

Education updates can be found on the council website and the Scottish Government resource, Parent Club, has answers about how the school arrangements will affect families.
