Showers not far away after sunny delight

-

Stirling sizzled as temperatures soared last week, writes Observer weather editor Scott Mclean.

There was less cloud last week than forecasted, meaning it was drier and sunnier than expected.

That resulted in near perfect conditions if you like it hot and dry. The maximum temperature in the past week was 27.3 Centigrade, which was the hottest day in Stirling since July 25, last year, and just 0.5 Centigrade short of the all time month of May record high.

May was also a relatively dry month, with only 57.4mm of rain which mostly fell over a couple of days.

Despite a low temperature of 6.2 Centigrade, the average temperature last week was a pleasant 16 Centigrade.

The maximum daily rainfall was 0.51mm, recorded on Sunday, May 24, which was also the weekly total.

Wind speeds reached 35mph on Sunday, May 24.

After a hot and sunny past week, the upcoming week ahead will turn a little more unsettled with a risk of showers. From midweek as the wind direction comes down from the north it will turn cooler and there will be a risk of rain on Wednesday.

For the remainder of the week it will stay mostly cloudy but some sunny spells could develop. The risk of showers won’t be far away especially over the weekend. Maximum daily temperatures will struggle to reach the mid-teens and it will be breezy at times.

The earliest sunrise will be 4.30am, with the latest sunset at 10pm.

Did You Know: 2020 has been a year of extremes for rainfall. This year was our wettest February on record, it didn’t rain consecutively for half of April and May has seen a number of good dry spells.
