Yellow lines in place at Devil’s Pulpit

- CHRIS MARZELLA

Parking restrictions introduced on roads surrounding a top rural beauty spot have been welcomed following long-standing issues.

Stirling Council last week installed double yellow lines on routes surrounding Finnich Glen, near Killearn.

In recent years, the area, also known as the Devil’s Pulpit, has saw its popularity soar after it was featured in smash-hit TV series Outlander.

As a result, residents living in the area have faced a parking headache, with day- trippers abandoning their vehicles along the A809 and B834, causing safety fears.

The new safety measure will allow the council to carry out enforcement activity to keep the roads clear of parked cars.

The lines have been put in place along the

A809, from outside the property known as Dualt to the boundary of Dalnair; the B834 from the junction of the A809 and the B834 to the junction of the B834/A81.

The council carried out a consultation over the plans which were backed by communities.

Convener of Stirling Council’s environment and housing committee, Councillor Jim Thomson said: “The council has fast-tracked the installation of double yellow lines on the roads around Finnich Glen due to the serious risks to public safety from dangerous and reckless parking.”

The safety measure supersedes the emergency ‘no waiting’ restriction in the area that was in force between 26 June and 16 July.

It also comes on the back of the council acting to temporarily remove access rights to Finnich Glen on public safety grounds, due to concerns over the numbers of people accessing the Glen itself.

Killearn Community Council welcomed the move but say some brazen motorists have continued to flout the rules. Community councillor Jim Ptolomey said: “There remains some evidence of tapes being moved and motorists still parking on the few remaining areas on the landward side of the yellow lines where it is possible to do so, but in general it has gone a very long way to resolving the parking problem. ”

Forth and Endrick Tory councillor, Alistair Berrill, says that footage surfaced over the weekend, seemingly showing people ignoring the new lines.

He said: “It’s great that the yellow lines are now in place. Unfortunately at present large members of people are selfishly flouting the parking restrictions. Hopefully once enough cars have been ticketed the message will get through.”
