Tullibody author’s look back at his roots

Childhood in village

-

A former Tullibody resident has put together a book which looks back at his childhood in the village.

Pensioner Drew Jamieson recalls when the Clackmannanshire village had industries like mining and a tannery.

His grandparents had made the journey to Tullibody from different ends of the country, Ayrshire and the North East, to find work there – Andrew Jamieson and Janet Kennedy were both from Beith and Robert Dallas of Stonehaven and Ann Donald of Aboyne and Stonehaven.

His dad Robert Jamieson was born in Falkirk, grew up in Glasgow, and his mum Mary Dallas was born and brought up in Tullibody.

The eighty-year-old, who lived in Tullibody from 1949 to 1959, also describes his schooldays in the village and his adventures in the nearby Ochil hills.

Drew now lives in the Laurelhill area of Stirling. He had wanted to write something down about growing up in Tullibody before the memories were forgotten.

He said: “This book is written for the older generation who grew up in the mid-20th century. They might recognise some of the people, places, events and memories. described.

“It might also interest their children and grandchildren who might struggle to visualise how their parents coped in a world without television, smartphones, iPads, social media and with few cars.

“It was a world where there was no television.

“There were no computers, no mobile phones. Telephones were rare.

“Only birds made tweets and twittered. Facebook was a knock on your friend’s door. Google was the local library if you could get there. There were few cars. Buses cost money.

“You walked or ran until you had a bike then you could travel further.”

Drew was also encouraged to write the book by Chris Calder and Ian Allan of the Tullibody History Group.

He added: “When my father and mother died I found photograph albums full of faraway places and long-ago people - but it was too late to unlock the stories because mum and dad had gone. I thought it very sad.

“So I felt it worthwhile to share my own stories before they were forgotten - mainly for the interest of my family.

“Chris and Ian of the Tullibody History Group thought that my memories of post-war Tullibody might interest a wider readership.”

‘A Time Called Tullibody: Boyhood in a Post-War Village’ is available from amazon. co.uk or direct from the author at dumyat2@ btinternet.com priced £10 plus post and packing.
