Tributes pour in for tragictony

- CHRIS MARZELLA

The heartbroken family of a former Stirling University student who died in Turkey last week after falling from the balcony of a hotel have been “overwhelmed” with messages of support.

Tragic Tony Mcdowall was spotted dangling from a hotel in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul before plunging to his death last week. Tony, originally from the Isle of Arran and who lived in Glasgow, was seven storeys high when he tragically fell to his death.

The 28-year-old previously studied at the university, turning out for its American football team, the Stirling Clansmen.

It’s believed he had been visiting the city with his American exgirlfriend and another pal.

In the wake of the tragedy, touching tributes have ben paid.

Stirling Clansmen took to their Facebook page to pay their respects. They said: “It is with great sadness that we learned of the loss of our beloved Tony Mcdowall. His loyalty, dedication and passion earned him the love and respect of all his teammates and coaches.

“Our thoughts are with his family in this difficult time.”

Richard R. Mandille added: “A hardworking, dedicated and fun teammate. Simply an amazing human being.

“Truly thankful for having had the pleasure of knowing Tony. My heart goes out to his family.”

A fundraiser has been launched in a bid to raise enough money for a headstone.

It was hoped to raise £100 but by Monday afternoon more than £9,000 had been raised.

The Justgiving page read: “Last week we lost Tony Mcdowall to a tragic accident whilst on holiday. Since then his family and friends have all been overwhelmed with the many messages they have received, from so many, offering their condolences and support during this incredibly difficult time.

“Tony was always the first to offer his support during hard times for others and this is something that has shone through within the many stories that people have shared with his family and friends.

“This is an opportunity to repay the love and support that Tony shared with others and to pay tribute to Tony’s memory and the many great times and nights out we all shared.

“Sarah, George and Sam would like to thank everyone for their messages of condolence, stories, fond memories of Tony and the many offers of support. This has been a source of comfort during these hardest of times.
